Deacon Spotlight: Cameron Cannon
Cameron Cannon (2021, BA in Communications with a Concentration in Media Studies, Minor in Theater)
Visa Inc., Marketing Manager – U.S. Client Marketing in New York, NY
Tell us about your current job role and employer. What are you currently working on?

I’ve been at Visa for almost 5 years. I’ve previously worked on the Global Brand Strategy team & N.A. Product Marketing team. Currently, I work on the US Client Marketing team. We serve our clients by executing marketing programs on their behalf. My role is to better enable our client marketers by providing resources, creating sales enablement material, and offering new capabilities to drive continued growth for the business.
What key personal and/or career experiences led you to where you are today?
Networking networking networking! As I learned from Professor Robinson, leveraging LinkedIn to further network with others in the industry is a huge reason I secured my internship at Visa in 2019 – which led to securing a full time offer the following year. I also believe my internal mobility has been possible due to networking with other Visa employees.
What is the most challenging aspect of your job? How do you navigate that challenge?
Most of my team is on the west coast or remote! I miss in-person collaboration, however, our team has figured out great ways of working to further our success.
What advice would you give to Wake Forest graduates about developing their personal life habits after college (finances, health, values, work/life balance)?
Pour into your friendships. Moving to San Francisco after college, I had to lean on my friendships since most of my family is on the east coast. When I moved to NYC in 2023, I had to lean on friendships again to learn a new city! Friendships have made a positive impact on my work/life balance, character growth, community development, & more! Be open to making new friends that you maybe didn’t know in college. Lean into new & old friends – especially when moving to a new city.
What advice would you give to current Wake Forest students and/or young alumni who are interested in working in your industry?
I believe marketing is a lot about “learning by doing.” Even if you’d rather do a different type of marketing or are interested in marketing in a different industry, I recommend learning as much as you can where you are. For example, the skills I learned on Global Brand have been immensely helpful in my current role today – even though the two teams are entirely different.
What’s next for your career? What future goals or plans are you pursuing?
I believe in Visa & the work there is to do – specifically in marketing. I’d like to continue my career at Visa & maybe explore other areas in marketing to become the best well-rounded marketer I can be!
